Challenge

One of the biggest airports in Europe initiated a tender process for new security lanes. Our partner Vanderlande, acting as one of the worlds leading integrators in terms of high-quality security lane solutions for airport security checkpoints, took part in the bidding process. Point FWD was asked to assist Vanderlande in responding to this tender as a specialist AvSec consultant.

Then, after being granted the winning bid, Point FWD was – and still is – part of the team at Vanderlande realizing deployment towards a checkpoint-wide operational product. The result being a product that meets the requirements, and not less important, that is embraced by its end-users.

Approach and Output

The basis for this client assignment is Point FWD’s operational knowledge about aviation security technology and operations. Our long-term relationship with Vanderlande and connection to their products and services certainly helped us to provide the best support possible.

Point FWD was – and still is – part of the team at Vanderlande realizing deployment towards a checkpoint-wide operational product.

The first phase of the process was about responding to the Request for Proposal (RfP) as released by the airport. Activities included detailed reviews of the tender procedures, technical specifications and capacity requirements. Helping Vanderlande successfully reacting to the bid with their winning solution was an exciting experience for the Point FWD team.

The next phase started right after. A fully airport- tailored lane needed to be manufactured and integrated with third party technology. And most importantly, it needed to be accepted by the airport. For all parties it was highly essential to know what product would be delivered and if the integrated lane solution would function as required at the airport premises. In order to validate this, Point FWD primarily created a Factory Acceptance Test (FAT) and successfully performed it together with the airport at Vanderlande premises.  After approval of the FAT, the next phase consisted of getting the lane on-site and work towards acceptation by the Airport in its operational environment. Point FWD created a Site Acceptance Test (SAT) which has been successfully performed together with the airport.

One of the most important phases started now. Whether a product successfully operates is fully dependent on the user and how well a solution is being managed in operation with all impacting factors present. Point FWD has provided trial monitoring support in order to closely track the adoption of the Vanderlande solution by its end-users. As a basis, Point FWD developed end-user training and afterwards provided the required care for its end-users. After all, this resulted in overall embracement of Vanderlande’s lane solution by its end users.

All phases of technology implementation are important and need personal attention and operational knowledge. The strength of Point FWD is that we work with the full implementation team up until regulatory stakeholders. In our work for Vanderlande we noticed this is key for a successful trail.

Trolley Security Scanner

Services provided

Parts of the scope of work are covered under the EU H2020 program. (853720)

  • AVSEC Legislative Guidance

  • Passenger Baggage Data collection

  • End-user requirement definition

  • Image representation and GUI development

  • Pre-ECAC approval testing

Challenge

Exruptive is an innovative security equipment developer based in Denmark, working towards an EDSCB-C3 approved and market-ready version of their Trolley Security Scanner. In their concept the traditional sequential processes of preparation and reclaim are made easier by using a special trolley that goes directly into their advanced X-ray system. Belongings are to be scanned by a fixed-gantry multi-energy X-ray system and this enables passengers to leave all items in their bags, such as Electronics and Liquids. After passengers are screened successfully, they can continue their journey in the airport with that same trolley.

Point FWD act as a long-term partner and assists Exruptive in the development of their Trolley Security Scanner, and make it fit within the operational boundaries of the AVSEC industry.

Approach and Output

Along the way, Point FWD has supported Exruptive with several key topics on their development path. One of the focus points from start of our partnership has been guidance on the regulatory and legislative requirements for developing x-ray technology for the AVSEC market.

Point FWD will define, organise and execute the test programme as a rehearsal preparation towards ECAC CEP.

Furthermore, initial scope testing on the first prototype version of the scanner line has been performed by Point FWD in order to asses the equipment on performance and operational readiness, as well as to capture operational images of actual passenger baggage.

Point FWD further assists Exruptive in the final development stage of their technology by setting the requirements for the end-user functionality of the Trolley Security Scanner. This has included the definition of implementation scenarios for the various processes of divest and trolley dispensing, but also detailed studies on the image representation and operator interface when screening images.

Point FWD acts as the AVSEC specialist on board of Exruptive, continuously supporting Exruptive with ideas for the integration of the scanner line into airport environments and contributing in the CONOPs definition for operational usage

In the near future, a new prototype will be ready. Point FWD will define, organise and execute the test programme as a rehearsal preparation towards ECAC CEP. The outcome of the pre-ECAC test will give insights in detection performance, functional performance and operational readiness.
