“One of the key values is the accuracy of design input, which in many airport cases is unknown due to a lack of in-depth and relevant quantitative process insights.”

Project description

For each airport deployment, a highly customized solution is critical. To support this, Point FWD collaborates closely with the client to deliver accurate, site-specific design input based on in-depth process analysis and performance modelling.

Challenges

Vanderlande Industries acts as one of the world’s leading integrators in terms of high quality lane solutions for airport security checkpoints. It's an state of the art lane solution that integrates an automated lane design with configurable multiplex screening software, being scalable and flexible in differing situations.

Our client strongly ties its design process to local requirements and dependencies, being able to customise its solution for optimised performance. Point FWD helps this client to assess the local situation by capturing the process and modelling for a functional design of its integrated lane solution.

Our solution

To provide precise input for the client’s lane design, Point FWD conducted a comprehensive baseline performance assessment at the target airport. Using our proprietary in-house tooling, we captured detailed process data at the checkpoint, including:

  • Subprocess performance metrics

  • Passenger demographics

  • Baggage content characteristics

  • Alarm triggers and resolution times

  • Security scanner and x-ray machine data

  • Reference data from both trial and non-trial lanes

This extensive dataset was not an endpoint in itself, but rather a foundation for concept design. Our consultants developed a functional model of the full checkpoint ecosystem, identifying operational bottlenecks, friction points, and capacity thresholds. The resulting output enabled scenario development for multiple lane configurations, allowing Vanderlande to test and validate design alternatives in simulation before implementation.

These insights were translated directly into design recommendations, down to the number and type of divest modules, reclaim layouts, and technology arrangements per checkpoint.
