Project description

Brisbane Airport Corporation (BAC) initiated a 5-month trial at its international terminal's security checkpoint. The project tested an automated security lane integrating a CT scanner (operating at Standard 3) and security scanner equipment. This trial was crucial in informing the future design of both international and domestic terminal checkpoints. BAC sought expert validation of their trial methodology and performance to ensure confidence in their approach and to guide key design decisions moving forward.

Challenges

For a period of 5 months, Brisbane Airport has been undertaking a trial project at its international security checkpoint. The trial consisted of security scanner equipment and a CT machine operated at standard 3, integrated in an automated security lane.

Point FWD has been asked to perform a multi-phase peer review to validate the current trial approach and to share their experience on trialling these types of equipment, as well as to identify any risks in the current approach and provide recommendations on the trial. Furthermore, assistance on the analysis of trial performance and functionally modelling design decisions was desired in order to better prepare for the design phase for both the future International as well as the future Domestic terminal checkpoint.

Our solution

Point FWD was engaged to deliver a multi-phased peer review of BAC’s trial. In Phase 1, we reviewed all trial documentation—such as the trial plan and data collection methodology—and discussed findings in detail with BAC stakeholders. We delivered a peer review report that validated the overall trial strategy and identified improvements in data methodology and collection points.

In Phase 2, Point FWD conducted an in-depth analysis of trial performance using checkpoint data outputs, including CT algorithm results, security scanner resolution times, and baggage inspection metrics. These insights gave BAC clear visibility into trial effectiveness and allowed for real-time steering of the project.

In Phase 3, we developed a comprehensive functional model of potential checkpoint designs. This including detailed analysis of operational concepts, component configurations, and process flows. BAC was able to understand the performance implications of each design decision and prepare effectively for future terminal upgrades.
