“Point FWD helped us translate our renewed checkpoint operation into practical, effective training for our security officers. Several weeks into operation, we can see that our officers are working confidently with the new equipment and know exactly what to do. Point FWD’s training approach really connected with our team and played an important role in guiding them through the transition.”

Project description

Bonaire International Airport prepared to introduce renewed checkpoint technology as part of a broader security checkpoint transition. The objective was not only to install new equipment, but to make sure the people operating the checkpoint could work confidently with the renewed process from day one.

Point FWD had already supported BIA across checkpoint design, market exploration, tender support and transition planning. As the project moved closer to operation, BIA asked Point FWD to develop and deliver a tailored operator training program for its security officers. The training needed to translate the checkpoint concept, system functionalities and operational procedures into clear, practical and role-specific guidance for the people responsible for daily security operations.

Training challenges during the transition

The renewed checkpoint operation had to be adopted in a constrained airport environment where training, installation and operational continuity needed to be carefully coordinated. Security officers had to become familiar with new equipment, adjusted procedures and the interaction between technology, process and team roles, without disrupting the ongoing security operation.

At the same time, the transition depended on consistent use in daily practice. A renewed checkpoint setup can only perform as intended when operators understand not just how the equipment works, but how their role fits into the full checkpoint process. BIA therefore needed a training approach that was practical, recognizable and directly connected to the airport’s own operational context.

Our solution

Point FWD developed a tailored training program based on BIA’s renewed checkpoint process and the role of security officers within the new setup. The program combined theoretical explanation with hands-on application. In the classroom sessions, security officers were introduced to the renewed checkpoint concept, system functionalities and process changes. The focus was on building a shared understanding of how the new setup would work in daily operation and what this meant for each role at the checkpoint, building confidence and ownership of the renewed operations within the security team.

The on-the-job training then brought this into practice. Security officers were guided through the operational use of the renewed equipment, with attention to practical task execution, interaction with the technology and coordination between roles during live checkpoint operations.

Throughout the training process, Point FWD also captured operational feedback from security officers. This feedback helped identify practical questions, adoption points and improvement opportunities that could support the broader transition and strengthen readiness for the renewed checkpoint operation.

About Bonaire International Airport

Bonaire International Airport is the main gateway to Bonaire, connecting the island to the world through domestic and international flights. BIA handled approximately 470,000 passengers in 2024, marking a significant increase compared to the previous year. This growth reflects Bonaire’s rising popularity as a travel destination, supported by expanded regional and North American air connections. As the airport continues to support tourism and economic development on the island, a smooth and reliable security operation remains an important part of the passenger journey.
